In my opinion this is the essential 80s Depeche Mode album from start to finish in context. Sure you can get a greatest hits album that takes some of these songs out in bits in pieces but this album is meant to be heard as is. Plus (and not taken away from the original album) there are 4 bonus tracks in the end. Sonata No. 14 In C Major is especially good and a cool departure for D/M.

The mixes are true to the originals but different enough to justify a second listen. If you are an old Cure fan you already have this album...if you are a newer Cure fan and haven't found this one yet you must listen to it. It is a must have.

Okay I know Paul Oakenfold hit 2006 like a Madman with Faster Kill Pussycat off of the 2006 album A Lively Mind and it was a killer track and album. But damn wasn't that the friggin Macerana of trance/dance/house. That song was killed. Yes, I know Bunkka has been on Diet Coke and every other commercial but damn this is a 21st century dance classic.

While Andrew McGregor of the BBC might not find this debut album from world renowned DJ Armin Van Buuren anything special, I find it great to chill to and have listened to it over and over it again. It is definitely worth your while. Zocalo is the top track on the album with Shivers, Empty State and Who is Watching others to listen to as well.

Despite the mass proliferation of newcomers, compilations and sub-standard artist albums, the trance bubble has far from burst, with the likes of Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and Paul Van Dyk clocking up more frequent flyer miles then ever before.

Shivers is Armin Van Buuren's first artist album (we'll discount 2003's 76 as that would be like saying Sasha's first full-length album was The QAT Collection), yet despite the wait, and a plethora of guest vocalists and producers as a support cast, there's nothing remotely groundbreaking, and very little original, to speak of.

Opening with "Wall Of Sound", featuring Justine Suissa and the aptly named "Empty State" sporting Mic Burns' deeper tones, the dreamy and ethereal approach to their delivery can do little to shore up the fact that they're drab and predictable songs. There's even former Genesis vocalist Ray Wilson popping up on the breakbeat-ish "Gypsy" - need I say more?

Surprisingly this album was two years in the making; recorded in Amsterdam, San Francisco (with Gabriel & Dresden), Miami (with Markus Schulz) and New York (with Nadia Ali of Iio who features on "Who Is Watching"). Armin's pairing with G&D on the rousing "Zocalo" is actually one of the album's few highs; the other in collaboration with fellow Dutchmen Remy and Roland Klinkenberg on the proggy "Bounce Back".

Armin is quick to declare that Shivers is a major step for him into full songwriting, having co-written most of the lyrics. A brave move that whilst perhaps satisfying his own craving, fails to offer anything new to the creative process.

As a DJ the sellout tours and worldwide bookings speak for themselves, however making the transition to the recording studio is not always as smooth. People may pay top dollar to hear a DJ spin, yet not nearly as many will pay a similar price for a DJs CD. Stick to what you do best mate, play other people's music.

Album Review From Andrew McGregor of the BBC

We have our first contender for album of 2004

This refreshing and at times startling debut originates, from of all of places, Scotland's far-flung Isle of Skye and the studio of 24-year-old Myles MacInnes. "I'm just having fun," he refreshingly declares, "It's got to have impact, otherwise I just don't see the point". Impact is right!

With a sound characterised by sophisticated electro stabs, classy breaks andfat bottomedbass lines it is remarkable to learn that most of Mylo's production toolsare computer internal. Hismusic is rich, varied and well balanced and sounds as ifit has had an army of engineers assisting him. Like AdamF who set out tomake his seminal Colours album on a limited equipment, Mylo's genius is evident in his one-ness with his G4.

Opening with a trio of downbeat electronica cuts - "Valley Of The Dolls", "Sunworshipper" and "Muscle Cars" - it's clearthat his time spent in the San Francisco's Bay Area has rubbed off withthe beats oozing of the distinctly rich surroundings West Coast vibe.

Mylo first appeared on the scene only twelve months ago with his debut single, "Destroy Rock & Roll" - a high-octane guitar workout bending chunky beats with a raucous vocal sample. Despite label interest, with the backing of a couple of friends, he decided to go it alone and created Breastfed.

A wise move that has since seen his label tipped as one to watch in 2004; stable-mates Linus Loves just one of a handful of acts tipped to make more than just ripples. And as with LL's "The Terrace" that takes its cue from Stevie Nicks', "In My Arms" similar weaves a hypnotic disco spell chopping up a riff from Kim Carne's "Bette Davis Eyes" from the same era.

With influences ranging from Prince ("Guilty Of Love") through to Daft Punk ("Ottos Journey") and even Scissor Sisters ("Musclecar Reform Reprise"), it's little wonder that The Face described him as "Scotland's answer to Royksopp". By refusing to adhere to any one musical style, Mylo may well become one of the most misunderstood artists of his generation, yet despite this, expect this totally absorbing debut to make its mark on the end of year 'best of' listings.
